With so many upscale restaurants in Dallas and my preference to eat out often, it is surprising that I have had so few memorable dining experiences. Taking a bite of something deliciously foreign to my programmed taste buds and sensing that my eyes might be rolling back in delight is the sign that I am thoroughly impressed. I was fortunate to have one such experience last night at 2900 just a few blocks from my home. Chef Mike is one of the lucky and skilled few to be selected to prepare a lunch or dinner at the James Beard House in New York. I believe they said that only about 20 are asked to do so annually and are eligible to receive one of 4 awards deemed to be the most prestigious honor an american chef can receive. Last night was the preview dinner complete with perfected wine pairings. 2900 doesn't have an extravagant exterior or the overly-designed poshness that one has come to expect of the restaurants in this area. It does have an atmosphere that feels cozy and friendly with a thoughtful staff that looks happy to be there. They serve you as though you are a guest in their home. What could be better that? I took the liberty of getting Chef Mike's autograph on the menu although I don't collect signatures.
